Center for Environmental Research & Technology

Professor Barth received his B.S. degree in Electrical Engineering/Computer Science from the University of Colorado in 1984, and M.S. (1985) and Ph.D. (1990) degrees in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Professor Barth was also a member of the technical staff in the Advanced Technologies Division of General Research Corporation, Santa Barbara from 1985 to 1986. From 1986 to 1987 he conducted research at the University of Tokyo as a visiting research student. Upon completion of his Ph.D., Professor Barth was a visiting researcher at Osaka University, Japan, conducting research in systems engineering from 1989 to 1991. Dr. Barth joined the University of California-Riverside in 1991, conducting research in Electrical Engineering and at the Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT), where he is currently Director and the Yeager Families Chair. Professor Barth’s research focuses on applying engineering system concepts and automation technology to Transportation Systems, and in particular how it relates to energy and air quality issues. His current research interests include Intelligent Transportation Systems, Vehicle Activity Analysis, Transportation/ Emissions Modeling, Electric Vehicle Technology, and Advanced Sensing and Control. Professor Barth is active in the U.S. Transportation Research Board currently serving on the Transportation and Air Quality Committee and the Intelligent Transportation Systems Committee. He was awarded the TRB Pyke Johnson Award for TRB outstanding paper in 2007. In 2011, he was one of the winners of the Connected Vehicle Technology Challenge sponsored by U.S. Department of Transportation’s Research and Innovative Technology Administration (RITA). He has also served on a number of National Research Council (NRC) committees. Professor Barth has also been very active within IEEE Intelligent Transportation System Society for many years, participating in their conferences as a presenter, invited session organizer, session moderator, program chair, associate editor of the Transactions of ITS, and member of the IEEE ITSS Board of Governors. He was the IEEE ITSS Vice President for Conferences from 2011-2012, President-Elect for 2013, President for 2014-2015, and Past-President for 2016. He recently received the IEEE ITSS Outstanding Research Award.

Dr. Kanok Boriboonsomsin is a Research Engineer in the Transportation Systems Research Group at CE-CERT, UC Riverside. He leads the Sustainable Freight Transportation research program at CE-CERT. Dr. Boriboonsomsin has over 20 years of Research & Development experience in the areas of sustainable transportation, transportation energy and emissions modeling, connected and automated vehicles, intelligent transportation systems, traffic operations, and traffic simulation. He has authored and co-authored more than 180 peer-reviewed publications in these topic areas. His research has been supported by various federal, state, and local agencies as well as the industry. Dr. Boriboonsomsin is a member of Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Institute of Transportation Engineers (ITE), Intelligent Transportation Society of California (ITSCA), Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE International), and Transportation Research Board (TRB). He currently serves as the Vice Chair of the Measurement and Modeling Subcommittee under the Air Quality and Greenhouse Gas Mitigation Committee of TRB, and as an Associate Editor of the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine. He is also a registered Professional Traffic Engineer in the state of California and Professional Civil Engineer in the state of Michigan.

Jay A. Farrell received B.S. degrees in physics and electrical engineering from Iowa State University, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in electrical engineering from the University of Notre Dame. At Charles Stark Draper Lab, he was principal investigator on projects involving autonomous vehicles, receiving the Engineering Vice President's Best Technical Publication Award in 1990, and Recognition Awards for Outstanding Performance and Achievement in 1991 and 1993. He is the KA Endowed Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of California, Riverside. He has served as General Chair of the 2012 IEEE Conference on Decision and Control and as President of IEEE Control Systems Society. He is currently President of American Automatic Control Council. He is author of over 250 technical articles and three books. He was recognized as a GNSS Leader to Watch by GPS World Magazine in 2009 and is a Distinguished Member of IEEE CSS, a Fellow of the IEEE, a Fellow of AAAS, and a Fellow of IFAC.

Henry R. Gomez is a Research and Development Engineer at UC Riverside's College of Engineering-Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT). Before joining CE-CERT, Mr. Gomez was working at Nora Lighting as an Applications Engineer running UL tests, lighting design, and quality control. Mr. Gomez has also served in the United States Marine Corps. Mr. Gomez received his Bachelors of Science in Computer Engineering and a Minor in Computer Science from a California State University. Mr. Gomez current efforts at CE-CERT include on-going California Energy Commission (CEC), CEC CalTestBed, and various local Water Districts funded projects. Mr. Gomez also assists in supporting engineer staff members with microgrid control an integration system combined with Vehicle to Grid (V2G) implementation under different conditions and different installation types. Other area of research at CE-CERT include Transportation Research Group, Battery Testing Laboratory, and Motor Efficiency Laboratory capable of efficiency and load testing of electric motors up to 25 hp capacity. 

Peng Hao is an Assistant Research Engineer at the Center for Environmental Research and Technology at the University of California, Riverside. He received his B.S. degree in civil engineering from Tsinghua University in 2008, and Ph.D. degree in transportation engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2013. Following graduation, he served as a postdoctoral scholar at CE-CERT.

Dr. Hao's research interests include connected and automated vehicles, eco-driving, traffic modeling and simulation, signal control and traffic operations. His current research focuses on developing eco-driving strategies at signalized intersections based on vehicle-to-infrastructure communication, estimating the performance of urban traffic systems using mobile sensing data, and evaluating the environmental impact of traffic congestion using sparse data.

Konstantino Karydis research interests lie in the intersection of dynamical systems, robotics, control and machine learning. Specifically, I seek to develop new mathematical and computational tools for resilient (semi-)autonomous robot navigation under uncertain and stochastic effects that arise naturally during robot deployment in real-world settings. Some representative areas of my research include modeling and control of nonlinear uncertain and stochastic systems, uncertainty quantification and probabilistic model validation, as well as motion planning, navigation and control of underactuated small-scale legged and aerial robots under uncertainty.

Ji Luo received her Ph.D. degree in environmental engineering from the University of California, Riverside, USA in 2015. She is currently an Assistant Research Engineer at the College of Engineering - Center for Environmental Research and Technology, UC Riverside, USA. Her research focuses on ITS strategies to mitigate human exposure to traffic-related air pollutants. She is also interested in emerging technologies and practice to achieve sustainability at local and global scale.

Dr. Scora earned his B.S. degree in Environmental Engineering and his Ph.D. degree in Chemical and Environmental Engineering from the University of California Riverside. He has over 25 years of experience working at UCR’s College of Engineering Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT) in the Transportation Systems Research (TSR) group. His areas of research focus on the relationship between mobile source activity, energy consumption and emissions, and include topics such as mobile source emission modeling, route optimization for energy and emission reduction, and the evaluation of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) strategies.

Michael Todd is a Principal Development Engineer with the College of Engineering-Center for Environmental Research and Technology within the Bourns College of Engineering at UC Riverside. Mr. Todd is also registered as a California Professional Engineer with expertise on Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), control systems, telematics, communications, and microgrid power systems. Project management experience has fostered numerous collaborative relationships with cities, counties, Caltrans, FHWA, MPO’s, and regional transit authorities. Mr. Todd consistently and successfully leads technical staff and engineers in the implementation of transportation, transit, ITS technology projects, systems analysis, microgrid development and operation. Mr. Todd has significant experience in system models, surveys, and analysis methods for evaluating performance, communication, reliability, efficiencies and associated costs. In conjunction with systems analysis methods Mr. Todd collaborates with public and private affiliates to implement transportation and energy alternatives which promote efficiency and emissions reductions. Mr. Todd is the lead Development Engineer in the Sustainable Integrated Grid Initiative at UCR, and has overseen the design, permitting and implementation stages of the SIGI smartgrid testbed system.

Alexander Vu graduated from the University of California, Riverside with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. He started out as a Student Research Assistant at CE-CERT as an undergrad, focusing his research on environmental friendly navigation. Upon graduation, Mr. Vu accepted a staff position with CE-CERT's Transportation Research System group. His responsibilities included data analysis, GIS analysis, programming, and software development.

Dr. Guoyuan Wu received his Ph.D. degree in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley in 2010, while he had also been employed as a graduate student researcher at the California Partners for Advanced Transportation Technology (PATH). After the graduation, he was appointed as the Postdoctoral Fellow and Assistant Research Faculty in the Transportation Systems Research (TSR) group at the Bourns College of Engineering—Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT), UC Riverside, in 2010 and 2012, respectively. Since July 2018, Dr. Wu has been working as an Associate Research Faculty. In addition, he has been holding an Adjunct Professorship in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, UC Riverside since 2017. Besides, Dr. Wu has been serving as a part-time lecturer on the graduate-level course in the Department of Civil Engineering, Cal Poly Pomona since 2014.

Dr. Wu has been conducting research on development and evaluation of sustainable and intelligent transportation systems (SITS), optimization and control of transportation systems (from powertrain, vehicle dynamics, to traffic flows), traffic flow modeling and simulation, and vehicle emissions and powertrain modeling. He has authored or co-authored more than 180 publications (including book chapters, journal articles, conference papers, and technical reports) and 5 patents. Furthermore, Dr. Wu serves as Associate Editors of IEEE Transactions of Intelligent Transportation Systems, IEEE Open Journal – Intelligent Transportation Systems and SAE International Journal – Connected and Automated Vehicles. He is a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and a member of the Vehicle-Highway Automation Standing Committee (ACP30) of the Transportation Research Board (TRB). He is also a board member of Chinese Institute of Engineers Southern California Chapter (CIE-SOCAL), and a member of Chinese Overseas Transportation Association (COTA).
