SPEAKS is open to incoming and current full-time UCR Ph.D. students.

SPEAKS Fellow: To be considered for a funded SPEAKS fellowship, National Science Foundation regulations require that applicants be full-time, domestic Ph.D. students. A domestic student is defined as a U.S. citizen, U.S. national, or U.S. permanent resident. Proof will need to be provided to a designated UCR staff member after acceptance.

SPEAKS Scholar: Domestic and International students funded through sources outside of SPEAKS are eligible to apply for the SPEAKS program.
How to Apply to the SPEAKS Graduate Student Research Traineeship Program
- SPEAKS is a graduate student research traineeship meant to enhance your graduate education and is not a degree-granting department. You must be accepted into a UCR graduate program or be a continuing student in a UCR graduate program in order to participate in SPEAKS.
- If you are a prospective/incoming UCR Ph.D. student, apply to graduate school at UCR by the deadline of the department in which you are interested. You do not need to wait to be accepted before applying to SPEAKS. Apply to the SPEAKS program using the APPLY NOW button.
- If you are a continuing UCR Ph. D. student, apply to the SPEAKS program using the APPLY NOW button.
- Priority deadline for funding consideration – January 31, 2024: Funding and space are limited; not all applicants will be selected.
