DHE-UCR Collaboration: Truck’s Emission and Dispersion Experimental Tests at the DHE Service Center

DHE UCR Article Cover

Dependable Highway Express (DHE) Service Center in Ontario, CA, has partnered with CE-CERT to enhance our understanding of emissions from freight activities, particularly in the Inland Empire region. This collaboration involves conducting experiments at the DHE Service Center using a heavy-duty diesel truck (HDDT) provided by DHE.

UCR researchers will gather real-world data to develop and refine a microscopic dispersion model for a more accurate prediction of emission rates and dispersion patterns from HDDT movements. The experiments entail positioning the truck facing south (upwind) to accurately capture emission dispersion. Various equipment and air quality sensors, such as sonic anemometers for wind speed and direction, CO2 measurement devices near the tailpipe, and an OBD-II for fuel consumption data, are utilized.

This partnership aims to achieve several goals, including a better understanding of how truck characteristics, activities, and weather conditions impact tailpipe emission dispersion in freight movements. It also seeks to develop a more precise microscopic dispersion model for HDDT and strengthen the collaboration between DHE and UCR, paving the way for future cooperation in sustainable transportation research.
