Vehicle Activity Analysis

One of the critical components of predicting transportation systems energy and emissions is correctly characterizing vehicle activity factors. These factors typically consist of parameters such average vehicle speed, frequency and magnitude of accelerations/decelerations, etc. for different roadway facility types. This laboratory has instrumented a "probe" vehicle that can travel on various roadways recording second-by-second vehicle parameters (e.g., location, speed, acceleration, road grade, engine load, etc.). This vehicle is used in several projects for collecting vehicle activity data that are indexed by location.

The laboratory has also carried out projects involving instrumenting an array of in-use vehicles that are operated in various cities. These projects (sponsored by the California Air Resources Board and others) provide up-to-date in-use samples of vehicle activity parameters such as vehicle number-of-starts, average vehicle speed, average acceleration/deceleration frequency/magnitudes, and driving pattern information.
