On Thursday, October 5th, CE-CERT hosted the highly anticipated annual STEPCon 2023, the Inland Empire's premier student STEM conference. STEPCon, short for Science and Technology Education Partnership (STEP) Conference, brings together innovation, education, and inspiration for young minds. This annual event immerses students with hands-on experiences, interactive exhibits, discussions, and presentations, making STEM fields come alive for participants ranging from 4th to 12th grade.
CE-CERT hosted a tour for 40 high school students, inviting them to explore the fascinating world of environmental research. These young minds had the unique opportunity to learn directly from CE-CERT’s graduate students, witnessing cutting-edge research in action. The high school students visited and learned about the Atmospheric Processes Laboratory, Emissions and Fuels Research Group’s Testing Facilities, Transportation Systems Research Laboratory, and Sustainable Integrated Grid Initiative’s microgrid.
One of the highlights of STEPCon’23 was the interactive exhibit booth featuring the EcoCAR EV Challenge Team at UC Riverside. The EcoCAR team showcased their new competition vehicle- the Cadillac LYRIQ Electric Vehicle, to hundreds of students from local school districts. The booth featured giveaways, leaving the young enthusiasts with tangible memories of their experience.
Hosting events like STEPCon is a core aspect of CE-CERT’s mission, showing commitment to education and shaping the future of STEM education in the Inland Empire. By providing a platform for young learners to connect with real-world science and technology, STEPCon empowers them to dream bigger and reach higher.
Until next year, the impact of this year’s event will resonate in the minds of these young students, encouraging them to explore the endless possibilities that STEM fields offer. We look forward to continuing to inspire the next generation of STEM leaders and innovators!
