On Friday, April 15th, the Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT) celebrated its 30th year anniversary of research and achievements at the University of California, Riverside. Since 1992, CE-CERT has proudly worked towards their goals of being a leader in environmental education and partner with various industries and governments to innovate technologies for the betterment of our local air quality.

Kicking off the event was the Director of CE-CERT, Dr. Matthew Barth, who has been with the Center since its founding in 1992. During those 30 years, he has seen CE-CERT move and expand from the UCR campus to the Bourns Technology Park, the development of several research groups and funded research programs, and the establishment of large events such as the Portable Emissions Measurement Systems (PEMS) Conference and On-Board Sensing Analysis and reporting (OSAR) Consortium.

Hosted at the Center’s flagship office, 8 CE-CERT Alumni were invited to present at the Research Symposium to an audience of more than 100 other alumni, current students, faculty, partners, and sponsors. Since their graduation, these former CE-CERT researchers have taken their talents to organizations such as the California Air Resources Board and Toyota North America, continued a career of teaching at the University of British Columbia and California State University-Bakersfield, and even founded their own firms such as Veritoll and Threadeo. 12 scholarships were also awarded to graduate and undergraduate students, thanks to the generous donations from many of CE-CERT’s partners and sponsors such as California Air Resources Board, South Coast AQMD, Bourns Inc. and the City of Riverside Public Utilities. Ending the daytime events were faculty-guided tours of CE-CERT’s main research facility and various laboratories.

The Celebration Dinner, held at UCR Alumni and Visitor’s Center, featured esteemed guests such as Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson of the City of Riverside, Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox of UC Riverside, Senator Richard D. Roth and Pete Hardigan of Ford Motor Company, CE-CERT’s founding donor.  Of the many milestones CE-CERT has had over the years, the center has collaborated deeply with the City of Riverside and continues to enhance its engagement with the community. Within the last year, CE-CERT has entered into close engagement with the California Air Resources Board with their recent opening of a new Southern California Headquarters in Riverside, just a few miles away from CE-CERT and the UCR Campus.

CE-CERT continues to increase its research portfolio, building on its 2021 portfolio with an outstanding number of 122 currently-active projects, 100 publications, nearly 80 student researchers and the expansion of 3 new facilities. The Center is on-track for great growth through collaborations and participation in competitions such as the 4-year EcoCar EV Challenge. There really is no limit to how far CE-CERT will go by its next Anniversary!
