2023 Annual Report of the Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT)

In 2023, CE-CERT advanced its mission to address critical environmental challenges through innovation, research, and education. With over $34 million in active funding across 85 projects, CE-CERT researchers led efforts to reduce air pollution, decarbonize transportation, and integrate clean energy systems. Our team expanded with the addition of four new faculty members and continued to mentor nearly 100 students engaged in hands-on, cross-disciplinary research.

From leading California’s Clean Truck Check Program to investigating atmospheric dynamics in the SCILLA field campaign, CE-CERT made meaningful contributions to science, policy, and public health. In partnership with CARB, the DOE, and other key agencies, our researchers tackled pressing issues such as brake and tire emissions, bidirectional EV charging, sustainable fuels, and lithium resource strategies. CE-CERT also laid the groundwork for a major expansion under UCR’s OASIS initiative with plans to construct new state-of-the-art laboratories focused on atmospheric chemistry, sustainable energy, and mobility.

These milestones reflect our commitment to translating research into action—pushing forward solutions that improve environmental quality and empower future leaders in sustainability and engineering.
