CE-CERT researchers are helping organizations to save energy and reduce their costs through the design, implementation, and testing of energy management systems designed to help buildings optimize their power use. These systems use hardware and software to manage building functions such as climate control and lighting based on real-time data, allowing facilities operators to respond to power events and to determine which energy efficiency measures are the most effective.

One key area in which this technology will be especially important is in the creation of strategies to address the availability and cost of electricity during peak hours (times during the day when usage is heaviest and/or when power demands may outpace supplies). This technology has the potential to be applied to larger scale energy systems, and may have a significant impact on electrical efficiency improvement throughout the state of California and beyond.
