    Call for Proposals

    The National Center for Sustainable Transportation (NCST), part of the University Transportation Centers program of the U.S. Department of Transportation, invites proposals from UC Riverside faculty for research. Funding available under this CFP is approximately $160,000 for UC Riverside NCST projects. Projects funded under this CFP are anticipated to begin in the Spring of 2021. 

     

    NCST will be accepting proposals:
    • CFP Issued: October 27, 2020
    • Cover Page and Abstract due: Monday, November 16, 2020 5:00 PM
    • Projects chosen for further considerations announced: November 19-20, 2020
    • Proposals Due: Monday, December 7, 2020 5:00 PM
    Call for Proposal Documents:
    Three types of proposals will be considered: 
    • White paper proposals to synthesize existing evidence and identify research gaps for critical policy questions, for a maximum of $25,000 (direct costs).

       

    • Seed grant proposals for new ideas that are not well developed but address an important topic with potentially large impact, for a maximum of $25,000 (direct costs).

       

    • Project proposals by one or two faculty for a particular project, for $60,000 to $80,000 (direct costs) each for one year.
    The goal of the NCST is to produce research that directly supports the efforts of policy makers and professionals to improve the sustainability of the transportation system. Proposals must fall within one or more of the following areas:

     

    • Environmentally responsible infrastructure and operations;

       

    • Multi-modal travel and sustainable land use;

       

    • Zero-emission vehicle and fuel technologies;

       

    • Institutional change;

       

    • Or other sustainability topics.
  • 2022-2023

    CE-CERT is pleased to announce an open call for the 2022-2023 NCST Graduate Dissertation Award.  This graduate award opportunity is being offered at UC Riverside to encourage and aid graduate students conducting research in transportation at UCR, particularly research that focuses on sustainable transportation. Graduate students are eligible for this award:

    • National Center for Sustainable Transportation Graduate Dissertation Award

    The Center anticipates the award amount will be between $15,000 and $20,000. 

    Eligibility:

    Grants are limited to doctoral candidates that: (i) are enrolled at UC Riverside; (ii) have advanced to candidacy, and (iii) have a dissertation topic that advances the center’s strategic goal of sustainable transportation. This center is funded by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of the Secretary for Research and Technology under the University Transportation Center (UTC) program.     Applicants must have advanced to candidacy on or before January 1 of the year of application. Applicants are further expected to have approximately 1 year of research work still remaining, such that the dissertations can be completed and filed within a time window that roughly extends from June 2022 to the following September 2023.

    Conditions of the Dissertation Award:

    The recipients will receive the award via employment as a Graduate Student Researcher, coordinating with their advisor. Funds must be fully expended within 1 year of the award. If you are selected and choose to accept this award, you must meet these conditions:

    1. Be registered as a full-time UC Riverside student.
    2. Complete a Ph.D. dissertation on a topic related to transportation.
    3. Submit a one-page concise memorandum to the NCST Associate Director at UCR that summarizes your research and academic accomplishments related to your dissertation. Please email report to Maxine Manglicmot at mmanglicmot@cert.ucr.edu.
    4. Produce a paper or report (such as a peer-reviewed publication, GSR Research project, professional report or a dissertation) on a transportation or transportation-related subject that is reviewed and approved beforehand by your faculty advisor and NCST UCR Associate Director, Matthew Barth, barth@ece.ucr.edu.
    5. Understand that the final award of this fellowship is contingent on the disbursement of fellowship support funds by US Department of Transportation, Caltrans and the University of California, Riverside.
