Overview

motor efficiency

The Electrical Motor Systems Testing Laboratory at CE-CERT is the first independent motor efficiency testbed in California. Developed with support from the California Energy Commission (CEC) through the CalTestBed Initiative, this facility offers a robust platform for evaluating electric motors, adjustable speed drives (ASDs), and related components under real-world operating conditions. It serves as a critical resource for industry partners, academic researchers, and technology developers working to improve energy efficiency in HVAC systems, industrial applications, and electric grid infrastructure.

Research and Impact

The lab addresses a significant energy challenge: motors and motor-driven systems account for a substantial share of electricity use in buildings and industry. CE-CERT’s team investigates:

  • Energy waste from inefficient or oversized motors

  • Design flaws in HVAC systems due to inflated safety margins

  • Software accuracy in motor sizing and performance projections

  • Efficiency of variable frequency drive systems across load conditions

  • Combined motor-controller system performance

This work informs best practices in building design, product development, and regulatory standards—supporting California’s broader energy efficiency and decarbonization goals.

Testing Capabilities

The lab is equipped to test a broad range of motor technologies up to 100 horsepower. Measurement and verification processes follow industry standards and use high-accuracy instrumentation:

Technology Type Capabilities
Industrial Electric Motors Efficiency testing under various load conditions; voltage/current harmonic analysis (0–100 hp)
Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs/ASDs) Controller efficiency and harmonic characterization under variable loading
Wind Generators Torque and electrical efficiency evaluation under dynamic load profiles
Special-Purpose/Custom Electric Motors Custom test plans with fabricated mounts and integrated instrumentation
