Emissions and Fuels Research

CE-CERT is a leading research institute in the area of fuels research. This includes some of the largest studies to date on the impact of fuel sulfur and ethanol on emissions from gasoline vehicles, as well as the largest Department of Defense study to date on the impact of biodiesel on emissions from military vehicles.CE-CERT has also played a key role in research being done by the California Air Resources Board (CARB) on biodiesel emissions impacts in support of the Low Carbon Fuel Standard (LCFS).

Drawing on CE-CERT's breadth and depth of experience the Emission and Fuels Research Group has also established an Alternative Transportation Fuels Research Center of Excellence to help facilitate implementation of alternative fuels and to evaluate issues associated with the implementation of alternative fuels.

The Emissions and Fuels Research at CE-CERT encompasses measurement of vehicle emissions in the laboratory and in the field, under controlled and "real world" operating conditions. Studies of the energy and environmental impacts of advanced emission control technologies and reformulated or alternative fuels are a major priority. Research also includes characterization of emissions from current and future vehicles to understand their environmental effects.

CE-CERT is a leading research institute in the area of over the road/real-world vehicle testing. Over the past five years, UC Riverside has played a central role in the validation of portable emissions measurement systems (PEMS) systems for use in EPA’s in-use testing program of heavy-duty vehicles through the Measurement Allowance Program.

CE-CERT has also been a leading research institute in the characterization of in-use emissions using PEMS and the MEL. This has included measurements of light-duty vehicles, heavy-duty vehicles, construction equipment, ships, port support equipment, trains, and even jet aircraft.
