California Air Resources Board Southern California Headquarters Ground Breaking Event

California Air Resources Board Southern California Headquarters Ground Breaking Event

November 27, 2017

After a 2016 vote to relocate its motor vehicle and engine emissions testing and research facility from El Monte to Riverside, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) broke ground on its new property on October 27, 2017.  The $419 million Southern California headquarters will be located on a 19-acre site on Iowa Avenue near Martin Luther King Boulevard, adjacent to the UCR campus, and is projected to bring with it approximately 400 jobs.

CARB's mission is to promote and protect public health, welfare, and ecological resources through effective reduction of air pollutants while recognizing and considering effects on the economy. The CARB oversees all air pollution control efforts in California to attain and maintain health based air quality standards. UCR’s mission to provide public service, research, and education to the region and the institution's long standing expertise in air quality was a primary factor in CARB’s Riverside selection.

“This facility will bring together two world-class institutions working in air quality and emissions science and promises to create a whole range of synergies that simply wouldn’t be possible otherwise. Building this new facility in Riverside now positions our region to become the global capital for air quality research.”

- UCR Chancellor Kim A. Wilcox -

Hundreds of officials and stakeholders from across the region and state attended the ceremony, including UC Riverside Chancellor Kim Wilcox, California Air Resources Board Chair Mary D. Nichols, Riverside Mayor Rusty Bailey, U.S. Rep. Mark Takano, D-CA, U.S. Rep. Ken Calvert, R-CA, state Sen. Richard Roth, D-Riverside, and Assemblyman Jose Medina, D-Riverside, among others.

Construction at the site is scheduled to begin in February of 2018, with a move in date scheduled in late 2021.
