CARB 50th Anniversary

50th Banner

This event, hosted by CE-CERT at the Bourns Technology Center, opened with a historic video highlighting the air quality challenges we have in California along with the history of CARB and its innovative history.  CE-CERT Director Dr. Matthew Barth, CARB Executive Officer Richard Corey, and SCAQMD Executive Officer Wayne Nastri presented opening remarks, after which three panel sessions were featured: Cleaning Up the Air: Technology and Policy Game Changers, The Role of Research – Major Game Changers, and To the Finish Line: Predicting Upcoming Game Changers. Many of these presentations are available on our symposium website.

During lunch, CARB Chair Mary Nichols was interviewed by UC Riverside Ph.D. student Drew Story, discussing California’s air quality, climate change, and the role we all can play in the development, acceptance and adoption of new technologies and policies. We also heard from Los Angeles Times Business Columnist Michael Hiltzik on the role of media in the public perception and influence in our decision making process.

In the afternoon, 300+ attendees explored a Technology Showcase that featured emerging sustainable technologies with the potential to have a significant impact on air quality, including air quality monitoring systems, fuel cell technologies, data portals and data-smart connected programs, a selection of zero emission all-electric cars, buses and trucks, and a renewable natural gas truck. The showcase also featured an exhibit detailing the future Riverside CARB campus, including a virtual interactive model of the indoor facilities. AVL kicked off the showcase featuring a live demonstration of a new futuristic light duty laboratory, providing a glimpse into what capabilities the new CARB facility may have and a great demonstration of University and industry partnership.

The California Air Resources Board and the College of Engineering – Center for Environmental Research and Technology are grateful to the presenters and guests for making this event such a success! We hope you will continue to stay engage by visiting our symposium website to see a recap and videos of the event. Stay tuned as we update this site with more information and announcements, including an upcoming student scholarship award that our sponsorships are able to provide.
