    The University of California at Riverside (UCR) will provide the California Air Resources Board (CARB) with operations and management of the Heavy-Duty Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance (HD I/M) Referee program in compliance with the HD I/M Regulation specified in Title 13, California Code of Regulation, Sections 2195 to 2199.1. The HD I/M Referee program will provide independent evaluations of heavy-duty vehicles and services for vehicles with inspection incompatibilities or compliance issues. UCR will perform and report all Referee actions and testing results to CARB. UCR is looking to hire Diesel Technicians who possess high skill levels in the areas of vehicle inspection procedures, emission testing equipment, and HD I/M program requirements. Incumbent Diesel Technicians will perform Referee inspections under the supervision of a regional manager or the project principal investigators including, but not limited to, visual inspections of heavy-duty diesel engine and after-treatment systems, readings from the vehicle on-board diagnostics (OBD) system, smoke opacity tests, and verification of vehicle modifications and/or compliance issues. The incumbent will perform these tasks in the field, or virtually through various meeting software packages. The incumbent will document the results of any inspection performed in relation to the Referee program and report these results to CARB. The current contract end date for this position is June 1, 2024, with the anticipation of being extended.

    • Please Note: The department is looking to fill (2) positions. Additionally, candidates may be required to take a skills assessment as part of the interview process.
    • The budgeted salary amount for this position is up to $64,290.

    Special Condition Requirement
    UCR will secure a legal document, signed by the Referee testers stating that they have no ownership interest in, or business or economic interest with the regulated communities of the HD I/M program. Required
    Has not received a State citation within the past three (3) years as of the date of the Referee Tester's employment with the University. Required
    Experience Requirement
    Minimum of 3 years of experience in vehicle inspection, diagnostic, and repairs with at least one (1) year of those three (3) years of experience in diesel power vehicles. Required

    Minimum Requirements

    • General knowledge of the concepts, practices, and procedures from vehicle ECM-related data logging devices.
    • Strong initiative and ability to learn quickly, including strong problem-solving and follow-through skills.
    • Ability to work in a collaborative manner, and to assist in identifying any challenges arise at work.
    • General working knowledge is necessary to independently apply principles, practices, and procedures in the completion of assignments.
    • Ability to present basic information and answer routine questions for vehicle owners/drivers, program staff, and the general public.
    • Knowledge of on-road heavy-duty engine and exhaust components over various fuel technologies.
    • Ability to perform OBD scans on light- and heavy-duty sources. General understanding of Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs). Experience testing with standard diagnostic tools.
    • Understanding of various engine and vehicle technologies, as well as an understanding of electronic control module (ECM) equipment/instruments and their appropriate operation and maintenance.
    • Skills in interpersonal relationships and communication between vehicle owners/drivers, site staff, and program management.
    • Organizational and decision-making abilities to prioritize work assignments.
    • Training and experience as a diesel mechanic with engine diagnosis, repair, and maintenance expertise.
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
    • Strong ability to maintain composure and professionalism at all times, including during high-pressure interactions with internal and external stakeholders.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Possesses a credentialed CARB HD Inspection and Maintenance (I/M) Tester ID
    • Bilingual skills in English and Spanish and/or English and Punjabi
    • Heavy-duty diesel mechanic expertise is highly desirable.

  • Junior Development Engineer
    POSITION OVERVIEW

    Position title: Junior Development Engineer

    Type: Full-Time

    Salary: $59,000 - $81,200

     

    POSITION DESCRIPTION

    The Transportation Systems Research (TSR) group within the Bourns College of Engineering Center for Environmental Research and Technology (CE-CERT) is seeking a qualified Engineer to assist with electric vehicle and sensor systems related projects. The preferred candidate will possess hardware and software expertise relating to automotive research, including both propulsion and perception systems. The candidate should be familiar with data acquisition systems, digital communication protocols (in-vehicle such as CAN, OBDII, J1939, and vehicle-to-everything such as C-V2X), programming, and on-board vehicle electronics. This position requires the design, integration, configuration, testing, and validation (with data collection and analysis) of Advanced Vehicle Technology related research deployments.

    The full salary range for the Engineer is $59,000 to $103,400 annually. However, the expected pay scale for this position is $59,000 - $81,200 annually. UCR bases salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs.

  • Aerosol Flux Postdoctoral Scholar Position

    The University of California, Riverside seeks applications for a postdoctoral scholar position. The postdoctoral scholar will lead to carry out high-resolution large eddy simulation studies to relate simulated turbulent aerosol flux measurements to prescribed aerosol surface exchange rates and analyze and evaluate turbulent aerosol flux measurements from a variety of field campaigns.

  • Aerosol Measurement Postdoctoral Scholar Position

    The University of California, Riverside seeks applications for a postdoctoral scholar position. The postdoctoral scholar will work with graduate students and the PI to perform mobile aerosol measurements of sub-10 nm particles within the Los Angeles metropolitan area through an EPA funded project. The objectives are to determine city-scale sub-10 nm concentrations, generating a source inventory describing emissions from selected sources, and developing a target inventory that will highlight geographic areas with a high likelihood of having high-toxicity sources. The project will provide opportunities for laboratory work, field work, and modeling activities.
