CEC Chairman Robert B. Weisenmiller and Southern California Public Power Authority (SCPPA) visit CE-CERT for Microgrid Discussions

California Energy Commission (CEC)  Chairman Robert B. Weisenmiller and members of the Southern California Public Power Authority visited CE-CERT on May 23, 2017 to learn more about the Center’s microgrid research program, and to discuss other related sustainable energy topics.

Meeting attendees included CEC Chairman Robert B. Weisenmiller, Kevin Barker (CEC), Girish Balachandran (Riverside Public Utilities), Dukku Lee (Anaheim Public Utilities), Stephen Zurn (Glendale Water and Power), Jorge Somoano (Burbank Water and Power), Eric Klinkner (Pasadena Water and Power), Michael Webster (Southern California Public Power Authority), Dr. Sadrul Ula (CE-CERT), and Dr. Matthew Barth (CE-CERT).

The meeting addressed issues such as integrated research projects (IRPs), storage, electric vehicles, and energy efficiency.

Chairman Weisenmiller and the SCPPA general managers presented CEC’s perspective on integrated research projects and energy storage, as well as state energy policies, leading to a general discussion about climate resiliency. The visit concluded with a next steps discussion and a tour of CE-CERT’s Sustainable Integrated Grid Initiative (SIGI) project.

The California Energy Commission is the state’s primary energy policy and planning agency, with the goal of reducing energy costs and the environmental impacts of energy use while ensuring a safe, resilient, and reliable supply of energy. To learn more about the CEC, click here.

The Southern California Public Power Authority is a joint powers agency that is composed of eleven municipal utilities and one irrigation district. The agency serves its members by providing effective forums of collaboration through committees such as: Customer Service, Finance, Public Benefits, Resource Planning, Transmission and Distribution, Engineering and Operations, Natural Gas, and Renewable Energy Resources. Other areas of involvement include legislative advocacy, contracting for support services, information sharing, training and regulatory monitoring.

The represented members are the municipal utilities of Anaheim, Azusa, Banning, Burbank, Cerritos, Colton, Glendale, Los Angeles, Pasadena, Riverside, Vernon and the Imperial Irrigation District; their service area encompasses over 2 million customers in 7,000 square miles.
